I paint landscapes that have meaning within and beyond the landscape.
I look back before I was created and forward ahead of the subject I stand before.
I paint rocks with modern tough acrylics and carve hard ancient rocks into delicate new shapes.
Chris Partington
I am originally from Ilfracombe in North Devon, England where I painted English landscape in oils, watercolours and acrylics in the 1970s. I have lived in New Zealand since 1984 now work in watercolours, acrylics and stone often using the New Zealand landscape as a backdrop in my paintings.
The main theme of my work for the past forty years has been "Time" in various forms, sometimes represented by a Celtic female figure within the landscape. My style has moved closer and closer to the edge of realism, using actual places and objects painted from life but containing a great deal of symbolism to give the painting a meaning beyond the landscape.
I have exhibited with The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts since 1999, in 2001 I held a Solo at the Michael Fowler Centre and have had three Solo exhibitions at the Academy galleries in following years. Although an independent artist my paintings can sometimes be found in dealer galleries and are included in private collections in New Zealand and overseas.
My gallery at Tawhai studio is located in the Hutt Valley, visitors are welcome to come and view my works by appointment and I am available for art tuition.
